Study Guide Dec 21st - Dec 26th

STUDY GUIDE

Monday, December 21: An Extra-Ordinary Night; Read Luke 2:11. It was an ordinary night with ordinary sheep and ordinary shepherds. Were it not for a God who loves to hook “extra” on the front of ordinary, the night would have gone unnoticed. God dances amidst the common, and that night He did a waltz. God comes into the common and His most powerful tools are the simplest.
Tuesday, December 22: The Gift of Grace; Read Proverbs 8:35. Grace is created by God and given to man, and on that basis alone, Christianity, is set apart from any other religion in the world. Every other approach to God is a bartering system. Christianity isn’t a bartering system; man has no grounds upon which to negotiate.
Wednesday, December 23: God’s Great Gifts; Read 2 Corinthians 9:15. Why did He do it, you ask in disbelief? He did it to hear those words of disbelief, “You did this for me!” The next time a sunrise steals your breath or a meadow of flowers leaves you speechless, remain that way. Say nothing as heaven whispers, “Do you like it? I did it just for you.”
Thursday, December 24: The Promise Remains; Read Matthew 1:16. Why did God use people to deliver His son? He didn’t have to; He could have just laid the Savior on a doorstep. The answer is simple. He wants us to know that when the world goes wild, He stays calm.
Friday, December 25: God Became A Man; Read Philippians 2:7. It all happened in a remarkable moment, a moment like no other. God became a man. Divinity arrived. Heaven opened herself and placed her most precious one in a human womb. The omnipotent, in one instant, became flesh and blood.
Saturday, December 26: The Strength of God’s Love; Read Romans 5:8. “Can anything make me stop loving you?” God asks. You wonder how long my love will last? Find your answer on a splintered cross, on a craggy hill. That’s me up there feeling your sin. That‘s your death I’m dying. That’s your resurrection I’m living. That’s how much I love you.

Study Guide Dec. 14th - 19th

STUDY GUIDE

Monday, December 14: Living In Harmony: Read 2 Corinthians 1:3-4. Does God honestly care about what is going on in our lives? The answer is “yes”. Even the midst of our times of despair and frustration, God assures us of His compassion and presence. If you are going through a difficult time, thank God for His compassion and then ask Him to teach you how to comfort others in their trials.
Tuesday, December 15: He Will Be Called Wonderful: Read Isaiah 9:6. The dictionary defines “wonderful” as anything that is so unusual or magnificent that it causes wonder or amazement. That is an excellent description of Jesus. Jesus was wonderful in His pre-existence as the perfect man who was also God. He existed from all eternity, and He was equally at home on earth and in heaven.
Wednesday, December 16: The Promise of Rest: Read Psalm 23:1-3. No Psalm is better known or loved than Psalm 23. It has become so familiar to us that we may have forgotten its riches. Take time to read it slowly and contemplate its meaning.
Thursday, December 17: Joy, Hope, Patience, and Prayer. Read Romans 12:12. Discouragement and depression can come for many reasons. We all brush up against them when we lose someone to death, or experience a problem that overwhelms us. When we feel discouraged or depressed, we need to turn to God in prayer and commit the situation into His hands. God wants us to be aware of His presence and His love during these lonely times.
Friday, December 18: God in The Flesh: Read Isaiah 7:14. Jesus lived only thirty three years, yet He transformed civilization, and after two thousand years, millions worship Him. The Bible teaches us the He is God in human flesh, God incarnate. Jesus the eternal Son of God never had a beginning and He will never have an end.
Saturday, December 19: The Christ of Christmas; Read Luke 2:11. Jesus came for all of us, and today He can be your Christ. Today you and I can know the Christ of Christmas who alone can wipe away your tears, lift our burdens, solve our problems, forgive our sins, and make us new. Your Christmas will be joyful as you discover these truths.
(Wisdom. Stilwell, Thomas Nelson. 2008.)

Study Guide Dec. 7th - 12th

Monday, December 7: No Worries in Heaven; Read Revelation 21:4. What have you done today to avoid death? Most of us are worried about staying alive and try to keep our lives as stress-free as possible and attempt to eat healthy. Why worry at all? When we get to heaven we will feel no pain and we won’t have to worry about getting old. We will all be ceaselessly strong.
Tuesday, December 8: Prayer Reminds Us; Read James 5:16. Prayer is the recognition that if God had not engaged Himself in our problems, we would still be lost in darkness. Prayer is that whole process that reminds us of who God is and who we are.
Wednesday, December 9: Grace Upon Grace; Read Philippians 4:11. What if God’s only gift to you were His grace to save you? Would you be content? You see from heaven’s perspective, grace is enough. If God did nothing more than save us from hell, could anyone complain?
Thursday, December 10: Prepared Like a Bride; Read John 3:29. John’s description of the future in the book of Revelation steals your breath away. In this final mountaintop encounter, God pulls back the curtain and allows the warrior to peak into the homeland. John chooses the most beautiful comparison that earth has to offer.
Friday, December 11: Just Pray; Read James 5:13. Do you want to know how to deepen your prayer life? Pray. Don’t prepare to pray, just pray. Don’t read about prayer, just pray. Don’t attend a lecture on prayer or engage in discussion about prayer, just pray.
Saturday, December 12: God Isn’t Hard to Find; Read Psalm 23:6. God is not hard to find; He is there in scripture, looking for Adam and Eve. God asks us “where are you?” as He continues His quest for the heart of man. It is a quest to follow His children, until His children follow Him.
(Grace. Gibbs., Thomas Nelson Inc. 2000.)

Christmas Play and Pot Luck

On December 20th during the service we are presenting the Christmas play "All I Want for Christmas.... is Jesus!"

Following the service for the potluck this month we are just going to have sandwiches and chips and then birthday cake for Jesus. We are asking for a dozen or so cold sandwiches made and ready to eat for that potluck if you are planning to come. The chips and cake are going to be provided and drinks/ paper products are also taken care of so all we need is to have families bring sandwiches. THANKS!!

If you are in the play we are practicing during the Sunday School time for the next 2 weeks, then on Wed. night Dec. 16th at 6:00 following faith finders. The 20th we will probably want to run through it during the Sunday School time and make sure we have everything ready. Thanks to all who are participating... It's going to be great!!

Study Guide Nov. 30th - Dec. 5th

STUDY GUIDE

Monday November 30: Leaders Broker Human Resources; Read 1 Chronicles 18: 14-17. Effective leaders know their primary job isn't to amass personal accomplishments, but to accomplish as much as possible through the gifts of others. effective leaders inspire their associates to greater heights in several ways. They know the keys to their hearts. They know the gifts in their possession. They know the opportunities in their path.
Tuesday December 1: Go To The Very End; Read 2 Timothy 4: 6-7. Even people who feel that they lack talent can contribute if they possess a tenacious spirit. Being tenacious means: (1) Giving all that you have, not more than you have. (2) Working with determination, not waiting on destiny. (3) Quitting when the job is done, not when you are tired.
Wednesday December 2: Go The Distance; Read Genesis 12:1-3. God often asks us to do things that seem almost impossible. When we respond to God's desires we often find that what seems like an impossible task becomes very doable. God is testing our faith in Him, not our ability to accomplish His request.
Thursday December 3: Touch A Heart First; Read John 10:14, 27. One of the most common mistakes people make is trying to lead others before developing relationships with them. As you prepare to develop other people, take time to get to know each other. Ask them to share their stories with you and their journeys so far. Find out what makes them tick and their strengths and weaknesses.
Friday December 4: Life Cycle; Read Judges 2:10-11. The Book of Judges provides a vivid biography of leaders, followers, and human nature and describes a cycle repeated even today. The cycle goes as follows: rebellion, repression, repentance, restoration. Many of us go through this type cycle in our relationship with God. What part of this cycle are you in?
Saturday December 5: Decision To Delegate; Read Titus 1:5. One of the most common mistakes a coach can make is to misjudge the level of a player. All team players fit into one of four categories with regard to the type of leadership that they need. Players who need direction, players who need coaching, players who need support, and players to whom you delegate. Effective leaders possess the ability to determine what motivates each person.

Next dates for Angel Choir and Faith Finders

All the meetings for Angel Choir and Faith Finders has been held this month. They will meet again on Dec. 2nd and Dec. 16th. On Dec. 20th they will entertain us with their Christmas programs.

Angel Choir performs

On Sunday Nov. 22nd the Angel Choir will sing during the church service.

Study Guide Nov. 16th thru 21st.

STUDY GUIDE

Monday, November 16: Life’s Toughest Job; Read Proverbs 22:6. One of the toughest jobs that we have to do is be a parent. Every child is different and every day brings a fresh challenge. There are three basic truths about being a parent. First, see your children as a gift from God. Second, let them know that you love them. Third, be an example by faith.
Tuesday, November 17: The Body of Christ; Read Ephesians 5:23. When we come to Christ, we come as individuals. We alone repent of our sins; we alone believe Christ’s death on the cross will save us; we alone decide to become His follower. Once we come to Christ, we are no longer just individuals; we are now members of His family.
Wednesday, November 18: Faith And Reason; Read Romans 1:20. Is faith illogical? If you listen to some people, the answer would be yes. Is faith illogical, as some would have you believe? No, not at all. Some of the most brilliant people in the world have a deep faith in Christ, and without exception they say that they believe in the Gospel because it makes sense.
Thursday, November 19: Still Serving; Read 2 Samuel 19:32. Many times when we begin to feel older and tired we say “I’m too old to do anything”. Let someone else do the work, I have done my share. Don’t waste those years, but instead ask God to continue to find ways to use you.
Friday, November 20: The Bible’s Center; Read John 20:31. Jesus Christ is the Bible’s central message. The Old Testament looks forward to His coming; the New Testament recounts His coming. Without Christ the Bible is just another history book, but Christ gives the Bible its relevance and its value.
Saturday, November 21: How Do We Define Success? Read Hebrews 3:1-2. Our world is obsessed with success. The world defines success in terms of financial security, athletic prowess, professional success or respect by your peers. God’s definition of success is very different than the world’s. Success in God’s eyes is faithfulness to His calling. What is your definition of success? Is it the same as God’s, and are you pursuing it?

Study Guide Nov. 9th thru 14th

STUDY GUIDE

Monday, November 9: The Price Of Commitment; Read 2 Chronicles 31:20-21. The Bible describes King Hezekiah as a leader who “did what was good and right and true before the Lord.” The price of commitment can involve a change of lifestyle, loneliness, criticism, faith in God and daily discipline.
Tuesday, November 10: If They Respect You, They Follow; Read Mark 1:17-18. People don’t follow others by accident. They follow individuals whose leadership they respect. The more leadership ability a person has, the quicker he or she recognizes leadership in others. When people get to know one another, it doesn’t take long for them to recognize the strongest leaders and follow them.
Wednesday, November 11: Choosing a Leadership Model; Read 1 Thessalonians 1:5-7. As leaders, we are responsible for finding good models to emulate. Give great thought to which leaders that you follow, because they will determine your course as a leader and the success of your group.
Thursday, November 12: Spend Minutes Wisely; Read Psalm 39: 4-5. A leader needs to know if the task is worth the time investment. What would happen if the leader wasn’t the one doing the task? Is there someone else who could do it just as well, and for whom the task would be time better spent? A good leader makes wise use of everyone’s time.
Friday, November 13: Evaluate, Then Empower: Read 1 Timothy 3:1. The place to start empowering people is by evaluating them. Remember that everyone has the potential to succeed. Your job is to see the potential, find out what he or she lacks, and equip him or her with what they need to succeed. Look for knowledge, skill and most of all desire.
Saturday, November 14: The Easy Way To Gain Leadership; Read Proverbs 1:7. Wisdom can be a leader’s best friend, especially in times of decision. The most influential person in a group is the one who has the wisdom to draw a conclusion that works for the group. Proverbs provides us with guidance on decision making.

Study Guide Oct. 19th - 24th

STUDY GUIDE

Monday, October 19: Who Can Fathom Eternity; Read Ecclesiastes 3:10. It doesn’t take a wise person to know that people long for more than earth. We see pain, hunger, senseless deaths, and we question why? God flirts with us, He tantalizes us, and He romances us. These are the moments that are the appetizers for the dish that is to come.
Tuesday, October 20: From The Inside Out; Read John 14:16-17. Do-it-yourself Christianity is not much encouragement to those who are done in and worn out. We need help from the inside out. Hidden deep within our heart that no on else has seen lies God who is willing to provide us with the help we all need.
Wednesday, October 21: The Ultimate Triumph; Read John 12:24. We do all that we can to live and not die. God however says we must die to live. When a Christian dies, it is not a time to despair, but a time to trust. Just as a buried seed sprouts new life, so will our body blossom into a new body.
Thursday, October 22: Sweeter After A Rest; Read Exodus 20:11. Our time has skyrocketed in value. Time that was once abundant, now is going to the highest bidder. The rest, the zigzagged command in music to do nothing reminds us that the music is always sweeter after a rest. That is why we are reminded to take a rest on the seventh day.
Friday, October 23: The Power Of Your Hands; Read Job 17:9. What if someone were to film a documentary on your hands? What would we see? Would we see hands that were taking more often than giving, demanding instead of offering? Leave them unmanaged and they can become weapons. When we manage our hands they can become instruments of Grace, they can become God’s hands.
Saturday, October 24: To Tell The Truth; Read Ephesians 4:25. Are you in a dilemma wondering if you should tell the truth or not? The question to ask in such moments is, will. God bless my deceit? Will the Lord, who loves the truth, bless the business of falsehoods? Will God honor the career of the manipulator?

Tuesday, October 13, 2009

Study Guide Oct. 12th - 17th

STUDY GUIDE

Monday, October 12: God, Our Defender; Read Psalm 62:6. What is God doing when you are in a bind? When the lifeboat springs a leak or the last penny is gone before the end of the month and the last bill is paid? We turn to God and He fights for us and takes over. He tells us “to remain calm; I will fight for you!” His job is to fight, our job is to trust.
Tuesday, October 13: Don’t Panic; Read Hebrews 10:23. Is your disappointment too heavy? Read the story of the Emmaus-bound disciples. The Savior they thought was dead now walked beside them. The next time you are disappointed, don’t panic and don’t give up. Just be patient and let God remind you that He is still around.
Wednesday, October 14: The Wages Of Deceit; Read Psalm 101:7. The wages of deceit is still death, not death of the body. The wages of deceit can be the death of a marriage, a conscience or a career. It could also be the death of intimacy, trust, peace, credibility, and self-respect. The most tragic death is that of our Christian witness.
Thursday, October 15: God Loves The Truth; Read Proverbs 12:22. Our Master has a strict honor code. God loves the truth and hates deceit. Why the hard line? It is because dishonesty is absolutely contrary to the character of God.
Friday, October 16: Blessed Are The Focused; Read 1 Peter 4:10. Blessed are those who recognize their God given responsibilities. Blessed are those who acknowledge that there is only one God and have quit applying for His position. Blessed are those who know what they are on earth to do and set themselves about the business of doing it.
Saturday, October 17: Fear And Faith; Read Acts 16:25. Great acts of faith are seldom born out of calm calculation. Faith is often born out of fear, desperation and a need for help.

Christmas Shop

It's hard to believe that it's time to think of Christmas already, but it is fast approaching. This year the Childrens Christmas Shop will be on Sunday December 6th. It's open to all children from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Items for the children to choose from are free, and will be gift wrapped.

We are in need of items for all ages. That way the children can choose to give a gift for brothers, sisters, friends, parents or grandparents. If you have items you'd like to donate, please contact Barb Salyers, or bring them to Joyfully Yours. There is also a collection box in the Methodist Church basement.

Angel Choir & Faith Finders start-free meal following

On October 14th, 2009 the Angel Choir and Faith Finders will begin. This is open to all K thru 4th graders. There will be transportation from the school to the Malvern United Methodist Church after school. Following choir practice, the Faith Finders will have a class with lots of projects and fun activities. From 5:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. that day, the church will provide a free meal to all the participants and their families. This is also open to the public. Since we don't know how many people to plan for on the 14th, we will serve hot dogs, chips, beans, and drinks for the first meal. October 21st is the next practice and meal. A schedule will be provided during one of these sessions for the remainder of the year. Any one is welcome!

Janice Ferricks is the choir director. Barb Salyers will teach the Faith Finders. Harold Tornquist is in charge of the dinners. If you have any questions you can contact any one of these persons and they will be glad to help in any way they can. Questions can also be directed to the Methodist Church 624-8320.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

The ministry is off to a warm and cozy start! To date, several members have donated funds, time, and material for this ministry. As of last Sunday, we have provided 2 prayer shawls, and 9 fleece blankets to comfort those who are going through a rough time. There are several fleece blankets completed and ready to be given. If you know of someone who could use prayer and love to wrap up in, please contact the church at 624-8302 or email chimestime@aol.com. You can also contact the same places if you would like to knit or crochet a shawl, or help with the fleece blankets.

BLTS (Bring Love To Someone)

As we near the Holdiay Season, our thoughts turn to those who are in need of the basic necessities of life. Food, clothing, furniture, warmth, etc. West Central Development has estimated that they will have around 40 families that can use our help. A box will be by the table at the back of the church from now until the week of Thanksgiving and then at Christmas time. Join the BLTS and make this holday season one to remember for several families. You can make donations to West Central Development any time. Their address is 313 Main St., Malvern, IA and the telephone number is 712-624-8172. Thank you for all your efforts to Bring Love To Someone.

SOS (Support Our Soldiers)

As you know, we have been providing casseroles for Carissa while her husband is serving our country> Since we are coming into the serswon of Thanksgiving, the Adult Sunday School class wil be collecting cards, and supplies to send to Chris and his unit. There are 200 soldiers in his unit and we would like to send them each a thank you. The youth have already made cards to send. If each of us would provide 2 "thank you" cards, we could thank a whole unit. Since there won't be any names on these cards, they could pass them along to other units. The soldiers are also in need of basic necessities and anything from home is a blessing and GREATLY appreciated. The gibbest item is socks. From there, they can use chap stick, tooth brushes, tooth paste, wipes, toilet tissue, hand sanitizer, hand soap, shampoo, etc. All cards and items will be sent to Chris and he will place them on a community table for all the soldiers to choose from. A box will be provided by the table at the back of the church for your items. You can also email chimestime@aol.com if you have any questions, or want to bring them to Joyfully Yours Country Decor. The deadline for gathering the above is November 1st. Help us say Thank You to a few of our service men and women.

Study Guide - Sept. 28th - Oct. 3rd.

STUDY GUIDE

Monday, September 28: Perfected; Hebrews 10:17. God doesn’t improve, He perfects. He doesn’t enhance, He completes. We still err and stumble. We still do exactly what we don’t want to do. When it comes to our position before God, we are perfect. When He sees each of us, He sees one who has been made perfect through Jesus Christ.
Tuesday, September 29: Set Apart; Read Galatians 5:22-23. Many times in our world we, as Christians, are despised, persecuted and mocked and singled out for our beliefs. It is in these times of persecution that we realize that the Holy Spirit produces the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. He encourages each of us to practice these fruits of the Spirit each day.
Wednesday, September 30: Rescued Heaven; Read John 5:24. When you recognize God as Creator, you will admire Him. When you recognize His wisdom, you will learn from Him. When you discover His strength, you will rely on Him, but only when He saves you will you worship Him.
Thursday, October 1: Let The Redeemed Say So; Read Colossians 3:10. Salvation is the process that‘s done, that is secure. Sanctification is the lifelong process of being changed from one degree of glory to the next, and growing in Christ, putting away the old, and taking on the new.
Friday, October 2: God Energizes Our Efforts; Read Colossians 1:28-29. Paul dreamed of the day that each person would be safe in Christ. How did he do it? What was his source of strength? He worked with all the energy that he possessed. As Paul worked so did God, and as you work, so does God.
Saturday, October 3: God Knows What’s Best; Read Proverbs 3:5. The problem with this world is that it doesn’t fit. It will do for now, but it isn’t tailor made as God would like it. We were made to live with God, but on earth we live by faith. We were made to live forever, but on earth we live for the moment.

Tuesday, September 8, 2009

Study Guide Sept. 7th - Sept. 12th

Monday, September 7: God’s Plans: Read Psalm 37:4. When we submit to God’s plans, we can trust our desires. Our assignment is found at the intersection of God’s plans and our pleasures. What do you love to do? What brings you joy? What gives you a sense of satisfaction? The longings of our heart are critical messages and are not to be ignored. God is too gracious to ask you to do something you hate.
Tuesday, September 8: Our Problem Is Sin: Read Romans 12:2. Real change is an inside job. You might alter things for a day or two, but the heart of the matter is and always will be the matter of the heart. Our problem is sin. We are in rebellion against our Creator, and we are cut off from the source of life. That is why the Bible uses terms like conversion, repentance, and lost and found. Society may renovate, but God re-creates.
Wednesday, September 9: Truth In Love: Read Psalm 89:14. The single most difficult pursuit is truth in love. Love is a difficult pursuit, and truth is a tough one too. Put them together and you are in for the ride of your life! Love in truth, and truth in love. Never one at the expense of the other. Never the embrace of love without the torch of truth.
Thursday, September 10: Safe To Believe: Read Romans 6:5-6. The resurrection is an exploding flare announcing to all sincere seekers that it is “safe to believe.” Safe to believe in heaven as our estate and the earth as its porch. Safe to believe in a time when questions won’t keep us awake and pain won’t keep us down.
Friday, September 11: The True Son of God: Read Mathew 8:25-26. Read this verse. Check it out. Open your Bible. Search for another time when the disciples corporately praised Jesus. You won’t find it. Only after the incident at sea did the disciples worship Jesus because they were the ones who were saved.
Saturday, September 12: A Parent’s Precious Prayers: Read Isaiah 54:13. Never underestimate the ponderings of a Christian parent. Never underestimate the power that comes when a parent pleads with God on behalf of a child. Who knows how many prayers are being answered right now because of the faithful ponderings of a parent. God listens to thoughtful parents.

Study Guide Aug. 31st -Sept. 5th

Monday, August 31: God Gives Rest; Read Matthew 11:30. There is a correlation between the way you feel about yourself and the way you feel about others. If you are at peace with yourself---if you like yourself—you will get along with others. The converse is also true, if you don’t like yourself; if you are ashamed, embarrassed, or angry, other people are going to know it.
Tuesday, September 1: He Is Coming Back: Read 1 Corinthians 15: 23. God has made a promise to us. “I will come back.” Do we dare believe this promise? There is a cautious part of us that wonders how reliable these words may be? How can we know He will do what He says? Why, because He has already done it once!
Wednesday, September 2: Nothing on Earth Satisfies; Read 1 Timothy 6:7-8. Satisfied? That is one thing we are not. We are not satisfied. We take the vacation of a lifetime, yet on the way home we dread going back to work. Contentment is a difficult virtue, because there is nothing on earth that can satisfy our deepest longings. We long to see God and we won’t be satisfied until we do.
Thursday, September 3: The Master Builder; Read Psalm 23:3. It is hard to see things grow old. We see our friends and family members grow old. We see the towns we grew up in grow old and we wish that we could make things new again. We can’t make things new again, but God can. He restores our soul. He will restore the vigor in our lives. He will restore the energy and He will restore our hope and our soul.
Friday, September 4: A Raging Fire; Read Romans 12:3. Resentment is the cocaine of our emotions. It causes our blood to pump and our energy level to rise, and it requires increasingly large and more frequent doses. There is a dangerous point at which anger ceases to be an emotion and becomes a driving force. A person bent on revenge moves further and further away from being able to forgive.
Saturday, September 5: You Have Captured God’s Heart; Read Isaiah 62:5. Have you ever noticed the way that a groom looks at his bride during the wedding? If the light is just right you can see the bride’s reflection in the groom’s eyes. What groom could bear to live without his bride? This is exactly how Jesus feels about each of us. Look long enough into the eyes of our Savior and you will see a bride. Who is this bride? You are, you have captured the heart of God!

Study Guide Aug. 24th - 29th

STUDY GUIDE

Monday, August 24: Lifting Heart and Hands; Read 1Timothy 1:17. The whole purpose of coming before the Lord is to praise Him, to live in recognition of His splendor. Praise…lifting up our heart and hands, is the occupation of those who dwell in the kingdom. When we praise the Father, we reestablish the proper chain of command.
Tuesday, August 25: What Size is God? Read Matthew 19:26. Nature is God’s workshop. The sky is His resume. The universe is His calling card. When you want to know who God is, look around you and see what He has done. When you want to know His power, take a look at His creation.
Wednesday, August 26: The Answer to Arguments; Read Colossians 3:13. Unity doesn’t begin in examining others but in examining yourself. Unity begins not in demanding that others change, but in admitting that we aren’t so perfect ourselves. The first step to unity is acceptance, not agreement, not unanimity, not negotiation or elaboration.
Thursday, August 27: Christ’s Ultimate Aim; Read Mark 10:45. One of the incredible abilities of Jesus was to stay on target. His life never got off track, He kept His course. Jesus could have done many things with His life. The Son of Man came to find lost people and save them. The heart of Christ was relentlessly focused on one task.
Friday, August 28: Don’t Be Troubled; Read Jeremiah 17:7. Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Jesus said “Trust in God and Trust in me.” There are many rooms in my Father’s house, I am going there to prepare a place for you, and I will come back and take you to be with me so that you may know where I am going.” This can be summed up by saying” You do the trusting and I will do the taking.”
Saturday, August 29: No Fears at All; Read Isaiah 41:13. Could you use some courage? Are you backing down more than you are standing up? Earthly fears are no fears at all. Answer the big question of eternity, and the little questions of life fall into perspective.

West Central Development needs our help

West Central has a client who is need of household items. Especially a usable kitchen table with chairs, and a chest of drawers. Any other items you may have that you would like to donate would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your time and attention to this matter.

School supplies

I was at Walgreens yesterday and they had nice backpacks for 2/9.99. Trailfinder I believe they were called.A nice size and nice looking bags. I picked a couple up and may go back but thought if you wanted to pass the information on others may want to get them now at that price. I suppose it is through the weekend. Office Max also had some great buys but limits of 3 per customer. KMart had a good ad this week too but I didn't make it there yet. I have set aside some boxes in the basement to put things in so if people want to drop it off or leave it in a box at the church we can start gathering for next year but getting the great sale prices now. Thanks. Barb

As you probably heard, the school supply give away was a great success!!!! The supplies we had were gone by 3 pm. Barb thinks we helped about 20 families and that we will need about 3 times as much next yr, because we will get the word out earlier to the public. The school did a nice job of letting families know when they registered. The library said we could use the facilities again next yr. because they thought it was a great thing. Thank you to those who helped and who gave!

I just talked with Sue at West Central and they are totally out of school supplies and are sending people to Sidney. If you want to drop some off at West Central, they will appreciate it greatly. Thanks Judy

Study Guide Aug. 10th - 15th

STUDY GUIDE

Monday, August 10: God Walks Among the Suffering; Read Matthew 8:17. Many times we walk past the needs of the suffering, pretending we don’t see or hear. We don’t want to become involved in their life situations for various reasons. We guard our emotions carefully. We need to remember that God does walk among the suffering. He walks carefully amongst the beggars and the blind and the lost. He takes our suffering upon Himself and carries us.
Tuesday, August 11: Why Deny? Read 1 John 1:8. We do ourselves no favors in justifying our deeds or glossing over our sins. We often come to Christ with our sin, but all we really want is a covering, a band aid. We want to skip the treatment and hide our sin. We wonder if God will heal what we conceal.
Wednesday, August 12: We Shall See Him; Read 1 Corinthians 13:12. What will happen when you see Jesus? You will see unblemished purity and unbending strength. You will feel His unending presence and know His unbridled protection. All that He is, you will be, because you will be pure as snow and will never sin or stumble again.
Thursday, August 13: Getting Our Attention; Read Joel 2:13. How far do you want God to go in getting your attention? God does what it takes to get our attention. That is the message of the Bible, the relentless pursuit of God. God is constantly stirring the bushes for lost sheep.
Friday, August 14: If Only! Read Galatians 4:7. Maybe your past isn’t much to brag about. Maybe you have seen raw evil, and now you have to make a choice. Do you rise above the past and make a difference, or do you remain controlled by the past and make excuses? You exclaim “If only!” If only I had been born some where else! If only I had been treated differently! Human life comes from human parents, but spiritual life comes from the Holy Spirit.
Saturday, August 15: Heed The Signals. Read Ecclesiastes 12:13. Here are some God-given, time tested truths that define the way that you navigate your life. Love God more than you fear hell. When no one is watching, live as if someone is. Succeed at home first. Pray twice as much as you fret. God has forgiven you; you would be wise to do the same.

The church does not exist for itself, but for the world that God loves so much that God gave “his only Son” (John 3:16). Living missionally means that the church takes the time to observe its cultural context – the world in which it lives and breathes and has its being. Living missionally means a congregation is learning to distinguish between the positive and the negative, to figure out what is right with the world and what is wrong, in order to offer the Good News and love of Jesus Christ.

Pastor’s Reflections:
The summer is going quickly and both churches have been very busy with a variety of activities. I have experimented with a variety of approaches to our worship services in an attempt to appeal to a broad base of people in our communities. You will notice in the coming months that I will continue to make greater use of Power Point in the announcements and my sermons.
I am intrigued by an article titled Shopping For a Church written by Scott Hibben the Conference LDM for Evangelism and New Ministry. Scott names several important things that couples in their twenty’s and thirty’s feel is essential when they go shopping for a church.
(1) A church needs to be a place (community) where Jesus is clearly there, at the center of everything they say and do. Churches really don’t offer anything different from what any other club, organization or league offers in our communities. (fellowship, activities, ways to get involved in the community as well as educational and personal betterment opportunities) The only thing that we offer different from anyone else is Jesus. We need to ask ourselves “ How does Jesus affect our fellowship activities, our recreational ministries, our child through adult education programs, and our community involvement?” The truth is that most church shoppers reject a church because they don’t see Jesus present in that church’s activities. Friends it really is all about Jesus!
(2) The church needs to be family friendly for people with children. Today the word “family” can mean all kinds of different combinations such as blended, single parent, racially mixed, cohabitating/common law, combined these groups of people make up 70% of the people who are potential members of your church. What then does it mean for your church to be truly “family friendly” with everyone and not just a chosen few? It really is a hospitality question, asking “in what way have you set a place for everyone at the table?”
(3) It is no surprise that young adults gravitate to young adults. Therefore when young adults, whether they are single or married, don’t see other young adults in church they often go where other young adults are. We need to intentionally put the young adults that we do have in places of high visibility. The real work that young adults do is to set an atmosphere of welcome and vibrancy for Everyone, but especially for church shopping young adults.
I invite each of you to keep these thoughts in mind as we continue on our Missional Transformation Journey. Blessings and Journey On!! Pastor Carl
Joint Vacation Bible School:
I would like to thank Paula Singleton, Leslie Foss and all of the teachers and helpers and those who furnished food for Vacation Bible School and the picnic at noon. It was well attended (almost 30 youth) and presented a wonderful learning opportunity for all. Let’s make it even bigger next year!!
Fall Confirmation Class:
I will once again be offering a Fall Confirmation Class for those youth who are in Junior High School and up. If you know of someone who would like to take advantage of this class please feel free to tell them about this opportunity. Adults are also welcome to enroll in this class. I anticipate that it will begin on Sunday September 13. and last for approximately fourteen weeks. Feel free to contact me (Pastor Carl) for details.
Calling All Potential Missional Transformation Interviewers:
Each church is at the point in it’s Transformational Journey that we have available six very exciting and important opportunities to go out into each of our respective communities (Malvern and Strahan) and interview people about their views of their community and their respective church. We have three of these volunteer positions available in each church that we want to fill by August 23 with training to take place on September 1 at 7 P.M.. These six people will be asked to undergo two hours of training by Ed Kail FOM for our District to prepare them for this important interview process. If you are interested in one of these positions contact at Malvern: Brenda Scott or Pastor Carl; at Strahan contact Helen Pollock, or Scott Hillyer or Pastor Carl.

Cathy reported for Janella Stephens and Angle Food Ministries - there were 39 units (not actual orders as some people ordered more than one units) sold. It was a lot of fun on distribution day. Janella has cut down the time for orders to be turned in from two hours to 1 ½ hours on the order days. Pastor Carl will put order forms in the bulletin the first Sunday of every month.

A motion was made to take $200 out of the Emergency Fund and deposit into the Angel Food account to be used for start up cash.

Study Guide Aug. 3rd thru Aug. 8th

STUDY GUIDE

Monday, August 3: Repentance Is a Decision; Read Romans 2:4. No one is happier than the one who has sincerely repented of wrong. Repentance is the decision to turn from selfish desires and seek God. It is a genuine, sincere regret that creates sorrow and moves us to admit wrong and desire to do better.
Tuesday, August 4: Knowing God’s Will; Read John 6:40. We learn God’s will by spending time in his presence. The key to knowing God’s heart is having a relationship with Him. God speaks to each of us differently as we develop a personal relationship with Him. God reveals His heart personally to each person. We learn His will as we take up residence in His house each day.
Wednesday, August 5: God’s Signature; Read Jeremiah 1:5. With God in your world, you aren’t an accident or an incident; you are a gift to the world, a divine work of art, signed by God. What makes us special is not only our body but the signature of God on our lives. We are His work of art. We are created in His image to do good deeds.
Thursday, August 6: More Than Meets The Eye; Read Hebrews 11:1. Faith is trusting what the eye can’t see. Your eyes look in the mirror and see a sinner, a failure, a promise breaker. Faith enables you to look in the mirror and see a robed prodigal bearing the ring of grace on your finger and the kiss of your Father on your face.
Friday, August 7: All God’s Children; Read Romans 11:6. To whom does God offer His gift? The most beautiful or the most charming or the brightest? No, His gift is for all of us. We are all God’s children. He wants us so badly that He will take us in any condition. He is not about to wait for us to reach perfection because He knows we will never get there.
Saturday, August 8: God Is in Your Corner; Read Deuteronomy 31:8. We are often tempted to rebel against God’s rules and leave home like the prodigal son. We often feel like we have out grown God’s rules, that they are too restrictive for us. Our God is not a fair-weather Father, He is not into this love-em and leave-em stuff. We can count on Him to be in our corner no matter how we perform.
